English 130-Levine: Getting Started with Your Research

Internet sites vs. Databases

From Thesis or Research Statement to Keywords and Phrases

Library or Web?

Research databases will save you time because they can do the following:

1. Limit by:

  • Type of Material; Primary Source, Scholarly/Academic and/or Peer-Reviewed, News or Trade Publication articles.
  • Date
  • Full Text

2. Preview summaries of articles.

3. Collect articles in a folder.

4. Email or Print pages or articles - or all articles that are saved in your folder.

5. Cite sources in MLA, APA and Chicago citation styles.

Create a CONCEPT MAP

  • Step 1: Write your main TOPIC or SUBJECT in the center circle.
  • Step 2: Connect the related issues in surrounding circles.
  • Step 3: Provide detailed examples from information sources you locate during your research process to support your related issues.

REMEMBER to consider:

  • Demographic or population = Ex. men, women, LGBTQ or children, adults, elderly?
  • Geography = Ex. Poland, Germany, United States?
  • Timeframe = Past, Present or Future?
